Pat Duffy Festival of Athletics and Fun Mile

The first of ten multiplier events for the Erasmus+ Movement Environment Well-being (MEW) Project was hosted by the International Council for Coaching Excellence at Leeds Beckett University’s (LBU) Headingley Campus and in adjacent Beckett Park on the afternoon of 2 July 2018.
The event was orchestrated to encourage participation in physical activity by taking part in different athletics events as well as in a Fun Mile on LBU’s Athletics Track and nearby woodland.
This event was part of the Pat Duffy Festival of Athletics, held annually in memory of Pat. Pat was a visionary in the field of sport coaching, and his research focused on policy and sport coaching.

The aim of the Festival of Athletics was to introduce several disciplines of Athletics to children and adults of all ages. Everybody could try different event with the help of volunteer students.
The fun mile was marketed as suitable for all ages and abilities. Participants were encouraged to walk or run, and to invite family, friends and colleagues to attend.
After the fun mile, as part of the Pat Duffy Festival of Athletics, LBU Athletics Club staged a British Milers Club Regional meeting featuring a series of 800 metres and Mile races, culminating in the annual Pat Duffy Men’s and Women’s Mile Races.
Over 300 individuals engaged in the series of events including the Fun Mile and learnt more about the objectives of the MEW project. Many also completed a post-event questionnaire which will form the basis of the MEW project research for Our Task.
